Rip Out the Dead Stuff. Let the Good Stuff Grow.

Underneath your lawn is a layer of dead grass, stems, and organic debris called thatch. A little thatch is fine — it's basically lawn insulation. Too much thatch is your grass being slowly strangled from below, blocking water and nutrients from reaching the soil. Power raking is the fix. It's aggressive, it's loud, and your lawn will look briefly terrible afterward (like a terrible haircut that grows out great). Give it two weeks and watch your grass come in thicker, greener, and more obnoxious than ever. Calgary lawns basically need this every year.
